{"id":1479,"date":"2025-04-20T13:16:05","date_gmt":"2025-04-20T13:16:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/gulfthoracic.com\/OldSAPH\/?page_id=1479"},"modified":"2025-04-21T06:51:02","modified_gmt":"2025-04-21T06:51:02","slug":"ph-diagnosis","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/saphconference.com\/oldsaphwebsite\/ph-diagnosis\/","title":{"rendered":"PH Diagnosis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1565 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/saphconference.com\/oldsaphwebsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Pulmonary-Hypertension-Diagnosis-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/saphconference.com\/oldsaphwebsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Pulmonary-Hypertension-Diagnosis-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/saphconference.com\/oldsaphwebsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Pulmonary-Hypertension-Diagnosis.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 16px;\"><em>Find out what you need to know about the <strong>Pulmonary Hypertension Diagnosis<\/strong> process.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 16px;\">Like any other disease, a patient\u2019s healthcare provider will diagnose PH by collecting information about medical history as well as family history.\u00a0 A physical exam will be administered along with a number of other tests and procedures.\u00a0 Symptoms of PH can develop over a long period of time and mimic other heart and lung conditions (i.e. bronchitis and asthma), making PH very difficult to diagnosis.\u00a0 Mis-diagnosis is not uncommon.\u00a0 However, initially, a doctor will try to confirm a PH diagnosis and look for an underlying cause.\u00a0 Remember, there can be many causes to PH.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Tests to confirm PH<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>There are a number of different diagnostics for Pulmonary Hypertension Diagnosis. Note that not all of the tests below will necessarily need to be conducted in order to determine PH in a patient.\u00a0 In addition to these tests, medical and family history along with symptoms will narrow down what tests are appropriate.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"line-height: 19px;\"><strong>Echocardiogram<\/strong> \u2013 Sound waves generate a moving picture of the heart.\u00a0 This can measure pulmonary artery pressure.\u00a0 The doctor can also observe the thickness and size of the heart\u2019s right ventricle.\u00a0 This is a safe, noninvasive procedure.<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 19px;\"><strong>Chest X-ray<\/strong> \u2013 This can tell the doctor if the heart\u2019s right ventricle and pulmonary arteries are enlarged, as well as general heart and lung anatomy.\u00a0 X-rays have been known to demonstrate signs of underlying lung disease making them very useful for PH diagnosis.<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 19px;\"><strong>Electrocardiogram (EKG)<\/strong> \u2013 This device measures electrical impulses from the heart with external electrodes placed on the body.\u00a0 This test can see whether a person\u2019s heartbeat is regular or irregular, and may indicate if the heart\u2019s right ventricle is enlarged.\u00a0 This is a safe and noninvasive procedure.<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 19px;\"><strong>Right heart catheterization<\/strong> \u2013\u00a0 This test uses a flexible tube (catheter) which is inserted into a blood vessel in a patent\u2019s groin or neck region.\u00a0 The tube is then threaded into the right side of the heart and into the pulmonary arteries.\u00a0 This test can measure pulmonary artery pressure and can demonstrate how efficiently the heart is pumping blood to the rest of the body.\u00a0 This system allows the physician to apply treatments to the heart as well.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Tests to Find the Underlying Cause of PH<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1567 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/saphconference.com\/oldsaphwebsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Pulmonary-Hypertension-MRI-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/saphconference.com\/oldsaphwebsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Pulmonary-Hypertension-MRI-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/saphconference.com\/oldsaphwebsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Pulmonary-Hypertension-MRI.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify; margin-bottom: 16px;\">Tests to confirm PH are important, however, beyond that, patients need to know what caused the onset of pulmonary hypertension.\u00a0 This is important, as it will determine an appropriate treatment(s).\u00a0 Remember: there are many causes for all of the PH forms, so the underlying cause must be determined.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"line-height: 19px;\"><strong>Lung function tests<\/strong> \u2013 These tests measure how well a patient\u2019s lungs work, and are used to determine the cause of breathing problems.\u00a0 These tests look at how much air a patient can take into their lungs, and how much they can blow out, etc.\u00a0 This helps the doctor determine whether a patient has asthma, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), or something else.<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 19px;\"><strong>CT scan (computerized tomography)<\/strong> \u2013 This scan is done on the chest to get a picture of the structures within the chest, such as blood vessels, lungs, and heart.\u00a0 Lesions observed may indicate an underlying cause for PH.<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 19px;\"><strong>Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)<\/strong> \u2013 An MRI can be done on the chest that can provide information about how the heart\u2019s right ventricle is working.\u00a0 It can also demonstrate how blood flows through the lungs.\u00a0 MRI can help identify an underlying cause of PH.<\/li>\n<li style=\"line-height: 19px;\"><strong>Polysomnogram or (PSG)<\/strong> \u2013 This is an interesting test in that it is given to patients while they sleep.
